Who Are The Lakers

We started off with just 5 or 6 of us throwing a rugby ball around in the park. We decided to venture off and enter a few tournaments and realised after about 18 months, we actually had a lot of potential and talented players. We have a diverse core group of players that stem from all around the world, which makes us quite an international club. Countries such as Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany, Columbia, New Zealand, Australia and the UK are to name a few.

In 2012 we decided to start the Lausanne Lakers, and from there, its been an amazing experience. What started off as a social throw around group, which turned into solid friendships and bonds that have been made locally and internationally. The club thrives on travelling around Europe competing in as many tournaments as possible. Through those tournaments the club has developed a strong foundation based on a culture on being there for one another on and off the field.

Most of the core group from 2012 still exists, and has established themselves as one of the strongest clubs in Mainland Europe. The club currently holds from its past 106 games, only 1 draw, 3 losses, and 102 wins. They have won 7 international tournaments from the past 11 they have entered. They are the current Swiss National Champions and have had 8 players representing Switzerland in the past 2 years, and also had the head coach of the national squads. They went on to win Switzerland's first ever Gold Medal in the European Mainland Cup, beating France in the Final 7-6.

This year in 2016, The Lakers have decide to put their energy and focus back into the grass roots of the club. This year we will be focusing on sharing our knowledge and experience and bringing new players into the sport. With the amount of knowledge and experience we have within the club, we are broadening our horizons for the first time and branching out into Zurich and Fribourg as well as Lausanne. Our goal is to have a social league up and running in all three locations within the club, by the end of 2017. This year Lausanne will host a social touch rugby competion that will run for 8 weeks including finals. The idea is to encourage players to see the benefits of not only the game, but the club culture and atmosphere that comes with it.

If we describe the Lakers and its culture in a few words, it would be described as a club, with strong morals on the field, but with a very laid back and social atmosphere off the field.

If you're in Zurich, Fribourg or Lausanne, get in touch with us, come down and see for yourself. The records mentioned above, were with players that had never played this sport before. Like all sports, it takes time to develop, but if you have the right players, the right culture, the right coaches, things will naturally progress.

Access us on our contacts tab, and check out the video below. Its defines the banter, mixed with natural ability that makes this club who they are.
